According to the results of a new study released by the Food and Drug Administration, the active ingredients in sunscreen may be soaking all the way down into your bloodstream.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association evaluated the systemic absorption of four commercially available sunscreens and found that at least one active ingredient was absorbed in significant amounts in all four formulas tested, according to the FDA.
So now what?
More studies need to be done to find out if there are genuine medical implications, and the FDA was quick to add that individuals should not stop using sunscreens.
However, this is probably a good time to consider switching over to mineral sunscreens. Mineral-based sunscreens block the rays physically (which is why they’re also known as “physical sunscreens”) and don’t get absorbed into the skin.
